Drywall repair is the cutting out, patching, taping, and refinishing of damaged wallboard so the repaired area matches the texture of the wall around it and disappears once it is primed and painted.
The patch is the easy part. Matching the existing texture is the part that decides whether you can find the repair afterwards, and it is the thing homeowners most often complain about after someone else has done the work.

Six steps. Two of them, diagnosing the cause and matching the texture, are what separate a repair that lasts from one you can still see next year.

Find out why the drywall failed
A crack from normal settling gets patched. A crack from an active roof or plumbing leak gets patched after the leak is fixed, or it comes back within a year. We say which one you have before quoting the repair.

Cut back to sound material
Damaged board comes out to a clean edge, back to framing where the hole is large enough to need a backer. Mudding over crumbling gypsum does not hold.

Patch, tape, and float the repair
New board is fitted and fastened, joints are taped, and the compound is floated out wide enough that the repair disappears into the plane of the wall rather than sitting proud of it.

Match the existing texture
Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, or smooth. We match what is already on your wall, which is the step that decides whether the repair is invisible or obvious under a lamp.

Prime the repair
Fresh joint compound absorbs paint at a completely different rate from the wall around it. Without primer the patch flashes through the finish coat as a dull spot.

Paint the repaired area
Wall-to-wall or corner-to-corner where the colour needs to break cleanly. Spot painting a patch in the middle of an older wall usually shows, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Texture Matching Is the Whole Job

Drywall Repair Questions
How much does drywall repair cost?
It depends on the size of the repair, how many separate spots there are, whether the texture has to be matched, and whether the repaired area needs repainting wall to wall. A handful of nail pops in one room is a small job. A water-damaged ceiling is not. We look at it and put the number in writing before starting.
Can you match my existing texture?
Yes, and it is the part of this work worth caring about. North Texas houses run heavy on knockdown and orange peel, and a patch that does not match the surrounding texture is the complaint homeowners actually have about drywall work. We match the pattern and the heaviness, not just the type.
How long before you can paint over a patch?
Joint compound needs to dry fully before it is sanded, textured, and primed, which usually means the repair and the paint happen on different days. Rushing it traps moisture and the patch telegraphs through the finish later.
Do you fix nail pops?
Yes. Nail pops are the fastener backing out as framing dries and moves, so the fix is to re-fasten either side of the pop, remove the old fastener, patch, texture, and prime. Filling the dimple without re-fastening means it comes back.
What about water-damaged drywall?
We replace it, but only after the source is fixed. Painting or patching over drywall that is still getting wet wastes your money and can trap moisture in the wall cavity. If you do not know where the water is coming from, get that answered first.
Do you do full drywall installation?
No. Alliance Painting does patching, repair, and texture matching on existing walls and ceilings. Hanging and finishing a whole house or a new addition is a different trade at a different scale, and we would rather tell you that than take the job and subcontract it.
How big a hole can you patch?
Anything from a screw hole up to a full sheet. Past a few square feet the repair needs a backer or new board fastened to framing rather than a simple patch, which changes the time and the price but not whether we can do it.
Do I need to repaint the whole wall after a repair?
Sometimes. A repair in the middle of a wall that has not been painted in years will usually show as a fresher patch even with a perfect texture match, because the surrounding paint has faded. Painting corner to corner solves it. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
